Heritage Timber Restoration
Timber Window Restoration in Sydney
Original timber windows are one of the defining features of a Sydney heritage home, and almost always worth saving. Noble Heritage restores Victorian, Federation, and Edwardian timber windows to full working order, retaining the original joinery, glass, and proportions that give period houses their character. From a single stuck sash to a whole streetscape of windows, we deliver conservation-grade repairs built to last another century.

Signs you may need this work
Common problems we resolve
- Sashes that stick, jam, or refuse to stay open
- Soft, spongy, or flaking timber around the sill or lower rail
- Draughts, rattles, and rising heating or cooling bills
- Cracked, loose, or missing putty and panes
- Peeling paint and previous repairs in filler that keep failing
Repairing, not replacing, original windows
Replacement windows rarely match the slim sightlines, hand-drawn glass, and timber density of the originals, and on a heritage-listed property they are often not permitted. Restoration is almost always the better long-term decision. Old-growth timber is far more durable than modern softwood, so a properly repaired window will routinely outlast a new aluminium or composite unit.
Our approach is to retain as much original fabric as possible. Where timber has decayed, we cut out only the affected section and splice in matched timber using traditional Dutchman repairs, rather than wrapping the whole window in filler. The result is invisible once finished and structurally sound.
What window restoration includes
A full restoration typically covers rot and Dutchman repair, re-cording and rebalancing sash windows, easing and re-hanging sashes so they glide, reglazing with traditional linseed putty, draught sealing, and a heritage-appropriate paint or finish. We can also discreetly upgrade weather performance and security without altering the look of the window.
Work can be carried out on site for minor repairs, or in our workshop where windows are stripped, repaired, and refinished under controlled conditions before reinstallation. We coordinate around your schedule and protect openings while windows are away.

Questions answered
Timber window restoration: common questions
Is it cheaper to restore or replace timber windows?
Over the life of the building, restoration is usually the better value. Original old-growth timber outlasts modern replacements, and repairing avoids the cost of altering openings and losing heritage character. We provide a clear comparison after assessing your windows.
Can you restore windows in a heritage-listed home?
Yes. Conservation repair that retains original fabric is generally the preferred outcome under heritage controls. We work to council guidelines and can assist with documentation where approval is required.
Do I lose my windows for weeks while they are restored?
Not necessarily. Minor repairs are done on site. For full workshop restorations we stage the work and secure openings so your home stays weatherproof and safe throughout.
